FALL FROM GRACE
FALL FROM GRACE
In Fall from Grace, Mengle uses acrylic and flashe on linen to create a swirling, tumultuous composition suggestive of a dramatic descent - or upheaval. Broad arcs of cerulean and turquoise dominate the upper portion, reminiscent of wind-swept skies or turbulent waves. Below, a deep field of purples and blues forms a dark backdrop against which vibrant, impasto-like knife strokes in fiery reds, oranges, and greens dance and flicker, depicting serpents bursting through the waves. In the midst of this chromatic energy, a loosely defined, pinkish figure tumbles and swings its sword — a narrative nod to the title’s allusion. Throughout, the thick application of paint and the velvety matte quality of flashe amplify the emotional intensity, highlighting a sense of chaos and transformation as the viewer’s eye traverses the painting from the bright, rolling sky down into the darker realms below. The overall effect, anchored by Mengle’s confident knife strokes and bold color contrasts, is one of formidable tension and deeply felt drama.
