PERCEPTION / OBSESSION
At first glance, Perception/Obsession draws our eye to the intense, suspicious gaze of a woman as she snaps off a part of her chocolate bar, wondering why we are staring at her. But we notice the surrounding eyelids surrounding, her reflection in the eye — in fact, we are the woman being perceived, we are the obsession of this eye. The radiating eyelashes deepen the sense of being watched—or perhaps trapped—in an ever-tightening gaze.
Mengle’s use of flashe and acrylic lends the surface a dynamic interplay of matte and satin finishes, with strokes that oscillate between softly blended passages with brush and bolder, more textured areas with palette knife, plus touches of shimmering interference blue and iridescent copper in her eye and chocolate wrapper, respectively.
