THE RADICAL
In The Radical, Mengle fuses elements of Western iconography with bold, psychedelic color sensibilities to create a mesmerizing desert tableau. Dominating the composition is a vast, swirling sky that arcs overhead in brilliant, prismatic bands. These sweeping ribbons of orange, purple, pink, and blue converge near the top of the canvas, evoking cosmic energy or an aurora-like phenomenon that pushes the landscape painting into the realm of the surreal. Below this dynamic canopy, a lone figure stands in profile wearing a broad-brimmed hat. Though rendered as a near silhouette, the figure’s coat and hat brim capture shifting highlights of pink and purple, aligning with the vivacity above. The terrain, punctuated by towering rock formations, integrates seamlessly with the color ribbons that spill onto the ground in sinuous streams of magenta, teal, and gold. This visual continuity between sky and earth—where lines and hues flow uninterrupted—blurs any strict separation between the two realms, suggesting a universe in constant flux.
