In this striking composition, Mengle immerses the viewer in a whirlwind of color and movement. Bold, palette-knife strokes in electric reds, blues, yellows, and oranges converge upon the central figure, whose form—outlined in sweeping arcs of white and blue—appears to twist and turn against a vibrant backdrop. Though the pose is loosely defined, there is a clear suggestion of a reclining figure, lending a dynamic energy to the canvas. The application of paint is thick and textured, with dabs and swaths overlapping to create a pulsating surface, and the eye is drawn to the patches of white paint that define the figure’s sleepwear, which stand out dramatically against the warmth of surrounding hues. Mengle harnesses color contrasts—placing fiery reds and oranges next to deep blues and blacks—to amplify the sensation of motion and vitality.
